INTRODUCTION BY MICHAEL MOORCOCK: visionary science fiction and fantasy writer Michael Moorcock’s Jerry Cornelius famously provided the ‘template’ inspiration for Bryan Talbot’s initial Luther Arkwright story: The Papist Affair [1976]. Michael explores key moments in Bryan Talbot’s maverick approach to writing and drawing revealing the passion for comics, cinema, steampunk and historical detail that have made Bryan a creative phenomenon.

SECRET ORIGINS: charts Bryan’s progress through the British Underground Comix scene; the saga behind the creation of The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, freelancing for 2000AD on Nemesis The Warlock and Judge Dredd, and working for DC Comics on Hellblazer, Sandman and Batman. The very different artistic styles and storytelling techniques Bryan developed for each of his innovative Graphic Novels from One Bad Rat, Heart of Empire, Alice in Sunderland, the Grandville series and Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes [the COSTA AWARD winning Graphic Novel created in collaboration with his wife, writer Mary M. Talbot] are analysed by Bryan, comic creators critics and fans.

CREATING A GRAPHIC NOVEL: focuses on Bryan’s unique working method. The essential crafts of Scripting, Layout, Pencilling, Inking, Colouring and Lettering are all discussed and lavishly illustrated in the context of Bryan’s comics and graphic novels with additional expert commentary by top creators.

BEFORE YOUR VERY EYES: On the 18th of May 2012, Bryan Talbot invited Digital Story Engine to record him at work in his studio. Over the next three days, DSE documented the Pencilling and Inking stages of page 94 of GRANDVILLE BÊTE NOIRE – the third volume in the Eisner and Hugo award nominated Grandville series. Now you can watch Bryan at work at the drawing board and listen to his commentary.
