THE STORY SO FAR…

DSE are in the last stages of editing THE GRAPHIC NOVEL MAN: THE COMICS OF BRYAN TALBOT, the four-part title documentary for the DVD.  The very first part traces Bryan’s early creative influences from fan to creator.  These include  Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce in the SHERLOCK HOLMES 1940s film series, Nigel Kneale’s QUATERMASS AND THE PIT, RUPERT BEAR, LEO BAXENDALEthe classic HAMMER HORROR FILMS, the brilliant CREEPY and the MARVEL COMICS RENAISSANCE.  To provide context there are some wonderful shared insights by then teenage comic and film fans on both sides of the Atlantic with PROFESSOR HENRY JENKINS, PAT MILLS and DEZ SKINN.

This is just a sneak peak at some of the content leading up to Bryan’s almost 40 year professional career.  It hints at the early breadth of influences which helped ignite the creative passions for art and history, the detective, science fiction, and horror genres that have made Bryan Talbot one of today’s most innovative comic creators.  DSE would like to thank all the respective copyright holders for their kind support in making this series of documentaries possible.

THE STORY SO FAR…

DSE are busy editing THE GRAPHIC NOVEL MAN: THE COMICS OF BRYAN TALBOT, but we would like to grab a moment to thank Dave, Colin and Rick at THE SHEFFIELD SPACE CENTRE for providing stunning archive photographs of Bryan’s signing tour for the first volume of THE ADVENTURES OF LUTHER ARKWRIGHT.

Image

Special thanks goes to Ambre Boissevain for providing rare photographs of her late mother and father, Henriette and Serge Boissevain.  We’re sure readers will know that Henriette and Serge were the founders of PSSST!: the groundbreaking magazine which collected the existing LUTHER ARKWRIGHT chapters previously published in NEAR MYTHS and then showcased new ARKWRIGHT material.  The Boissevains later went on to support Bryan for two years in the style of Victorian patrons enabling him to complete his vision of THE ADVENTURES OF LUTHER ARKWRIGHT.

DSE are genuinely thrilled on a daily basis by the opportunity of working with and personally ‘re-discovering’ the hidden grandeur of Bryan’s original artwork which has never been presented in this kind of close-up detail before, and is used to lavishly illustrate Bryan’s creative approach.  We feel fans and first time readers are in for a real treat because with the release of THE GRAPHIC NOVEL MAN: THE COMICS OF BRYAN TALBOT they will be able to appreciate Bryan’s unique approach to sequential storytelling in a new and exciting way through a combination of digital technology and the informed commentary of industry professionals.

INTRODUCTION BY MICHAEL MOORCOCK

THE GRAPHIC NOVEL MAN: THE COMICS OF BRYAN TALBOT [Title film].  THE GRAPHIC NOVEL MAN traces not only the life and career of the great artist/writer, but explores the talent and passion that have made Bryan Talbot one of the world’s most influential comic creators.

Bryan Talbot emerged in the mid-70s as a major force in the British Underground Comix scene with The Adventures of Luther Arkwright – the first UK graphic novel.  His work on Batman, 2000AD, Sandman and Hellblazer, laid the creative foundations for his groundbreaking The Tale of One Bad Rat and the ‘dream documentary’ Alice in Sunderland.

Bryan’s innovative collaboration with his wife Mary Talbot Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes won the 2013 Costa Biography Award.  His maverick approach to expanding the boundaries of sequential storytelling continues in the best selling Grandville series of anthropomorphic Steam Punk detective thrillers – hailed as Rupert the Bear meets Quentin Tarantino!

WRITING PICTURES AND DRAWING WORDS focuses on Bryan’s unique approach to creating comics.  The essential comic crafts of Scripting, Layout, Pencilling, Inking, Colouring and Lettering are all discussed and lavishly illustrated in the context of Bryan’s career spanning multi-award winning comics and graphic novels with additional expert contributions from other best selling comic artists and writers.  .

GRANDVILLE BÊTE NOIRE: THE EVOLUTION OF PAGE 94

COMMENTARY BY BRYAN TALBOT.

On the 18th of May 2012, Bryan Talbot invited Digital Story Engine to record him at work in his studio.  Over the next three days, DSE documented the Pencilling and Inking stages of page 94 of GRANDVILLE BÊTE NOIRE – the third volume in the Eisner and Hugo award nominated Grandville series.
